Valley Village's Bike Lane and Park Are Mid-Rebuild. Here's the Neighborhood Calendar Around Them.

Two of the largest outdoor spaces Valley Village shares are on public-works schedules that end around 2028. One is the Chandler Boulevard bikeway along the Metro G Line. The other is Valley Village Park. Both will look different by the time Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Games, and both will be partly under construction for much of the time until then. Two dates stay put. The farmers market on Colfax runs every Saturday, and Light Up Valley Village returns on December 12.

Chandler Is Half Changed, and the Target Is the 2028 Games

The Chandler Bicycle Connection is a $7 million city project that reconfigures about three miles of existing bike lanes on Chandler Boulevard. It runs from near the North Hollywood Metro B and G Line station west to near Coldwater Canyon Avenue, all along the G Line busway. Construction began in March 2026, as the Daily News reported.

The biggest change is where the lane sits. For most of the route, the old right-side bike lanes have been moved to the left side of the street, next to the landscaped median where the G Line buses run. Streetsblog Los Angeles says the city chose this layout to keep as much car parking as possible. The design calls for Class IV protected lanes with raised rubber "armadillos" and soft-hit white plastic bollards. The project also rebuilds curbs and ramps to current accessibility standards and changes some traffic signals.

Two blocks of the route work differently, and they are the ones nearest Valley Village's eastern edge. When Streetsblog visited on July 12, the eastbound side from Colfax Avenue to Tujunga Avenue looked close to finished. On that stretch the lane switches to a standard right-side lane protected by parked cars. Along North Hollywood Park, the lane runs between diagonal parking and the park. A month later, Streetsblog reported that crews were adding low, hard plastic barriers about the size of a parking-lot wheel stop. Between Tujunga and Vineland, including the south side of the NoHo Station park-and-ride lots, the old unprotected lanes now had parking protection.

That August report is the latest close look at the street. Work still on the list over the summer included more green paint, intersection treatments, striping at some left-turn pockets, and a concrete boarding island at North Hollywood Station. In its August 6 update, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation said "Construction is underway" and warned of possible lane closures in the project area. It described the finished route as closing a three-mile gap between the Chandler and Metro G Line bike paths, creating a 21-mile protected route from Burbank to the Sepulveda Basin. It also stated the target directly: "I look forward to the completion of the Chandler Bike Connection by the 28 Games!"

So the bikeway works now, but it isn't finished. A Saturday ride east toward NoHo Station already uses the new protected blocks. The full route to Burbank and the Sepulveda Basin is officially scheduled around the Olympics.

Valley Village Park Has a Place in a Seven-Park Program

The park has a longer timeline. On October 1, 2026, Councilmember Adrin Nazarian, LADWP, LA Recreation and Parks, and the LA Bureau of Engineering broke ground at Valley Plaza Park on a stormwater capture program covering seven East San Fernando Valley parks. Valley Village Park is one of them, along with Valley Plaza Park North and South, Strathern Park North, Whitsett Fields Park, Fernangeles Park, and David M. Gonzales Park.

The program collects rainwater and urban runoff below ground. The release describes millions of gallons captured that would otherwise flow to the ocean, with fewer pollutants reaching the Tujunga Wash, the Los Angeles River, and the ocean. Above ground, it promises native landscaping, new trees, and other recreational improvements. For Valley Village Park specifically, a 2024 Recreation and Parks board report lists hydration stations, improved walking paths, trees, and benches and seating areas.

The groundbreaking took place at Valley Plaza, not at Valley Village Park, and LADWP's own documents give two different construction windows for the Valley Village site.

Project What changes Official timing Status this fall
Chandler Bicycle Connection About three miles of bike lanes moved to the median side, with protected blocks near Colfax, Tujunga and Vineland Construction began March 2026; LADOT targets completion by the 2028 Games Barriers going in as of August 2026; lane closures possible
Valley Village Park stormwater capture Underground stormwater capture, plus walking paths, hydration stations, trees and seating May 2026 to March 2028 on LADWP's program page; August 2026 to June 2028 on LADWP's program fact sheet Program broke ground October 1, 2026, at Valley Plaza Park

Either way, the work lasts more than a year and a half, and it ends about when the Chandler bikeway is supposed to be finished. Both of Valley Village's main outdoor routes are scheduled to be finished at about the same time.

The Park Next Door Shows How the Work Arrives

Valley Plaza is where the program broke ground, and its construction notice shows what the work can look like at the other parks. The North Hollywood Northeast Neighborhood Council posted the notice alongside a September 3 community meeting. It said crews would begin mobilizing in September 2026, that the St. Clair Avenue parking lot would close for an extended period, and that work is expected to finish by August 2028.

The notice covered only Valley Plaza Park South and North. Still, it gives a sense of the scale. At Valley Plaza, a parking lot closes for most of two years, and the project runs nearly two years from mobilization to completion. When the Valley Village Park phase begins, a similar notice is the document to look for.

Saturdays on Colfax Keep Their Usual Shape

While both projects run on multi-year schedules, the farmers market at 5000 Colfax Avenue keeps a weekly one. The NoHo Farmers Market lists its hours as Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It describes itself as a nonprofit and advertises California produce, bread, nuts, cheeses, juices, cookies and crafts, with live entertainment and children's activities.

For a cyclist, the market and the bikeway are close together. The market sits on Colfax, and the Colfax-to-Tujunga stretch of Chandler was one of the first blocks to look finished this summer. Of all the new protected blocks, that one is the shortest ride from the market.

December 12, Hour by Hour

The year's biggest community date also starts at the market. The Neighborhood Council Valley Village lists the 19th annual Light Up Valley Village for Saturday, December 12, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., in two parts:

  1. 10 a.m. to noon, Farmers Market at 5000 Colfax Avenue. The morning part of the event takes place during the regular Saturday market.
  2. 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Magnolia Boulevard and Whitsett. The evening gathering includes holiday shopping, holiday treats, free food and Santa.
  3. All day, giving. A student committee runs a toy drive, and organizers collect food for the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry.

The event connects Colfax and Magnolia on a day with two separate time blocks. The middle of the afternoon is open. Bringing a canned good or a wrapped toy to either part counts toward the drives.

Where the Timelines Get Raised Next

The neighborhood council meets on a regular schedule, and that is where local questions about the park phase and the Chandler closures are most likely to come up. On its November calendar, Neighborhood Council Valley Village lists a board meeting on November 18, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. LADWP's program page at LADWP.com/parks is where the official Valley Village Park construction window is posted.

Over the next two years, both the bike lanes and the park will change.
